SUPER CYCLONE AMPHAN

A TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION

The deadly Cyclone hitting Bengal in recent past battered the state for nine hours on yesterday with a peak speed of 165 kmph claiming the lives of 72 people leaving behind a trail of destruction across West Bengal today.

Amphan made landfall near Sagar Islands around 2:30 p.m with a speed of 155-165 kmph then entered Kolkata around 5 p.m.The diameter of the eye was 30 km and took exactly six and half hours to move across the city and around 11:30 p.m. finally it had moved to Bangladesh.

The ‘City of Joy’ and it’s immediate neighbourhood got a constant 70-90 kmph wind speed and gusting it was reached to 112kmph in Alipore & 133 kmph in Dumdum.It had already claimed 10-12 lives.

Highlights:-

*Landfall in Sagar Islands at 2:30 p.m.

*Winspeed during landfall 155-165 kmph with gusts of wind 185kmph.

*Windspeed in Kolkata during 80-90 kmph.

*Maximum wind speed in Kolkata 133 kmph in Dumdum & 112 kmph in Alipore.

Amphan crossed Kolkata around 5p.m.-11:30 k.m.

Total Rainfall in Kolkata (8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m)244.2 m.m

Death,Injuries & Destruction

#72 people killed

#Extensive damage to property across North & South 24 Parganas,East & West Midnapur, Howrah,Hooghly & Kolkata.Extent of damage to be assessed in next few days.

#300 trees and 💯 of signal posts and lamp posts uprooted in the city,Salt Lake and Newtown-water logging across the city.

Crop Loss:-Standing Paddy in 30000 hectares in East Burdwan,10000 hectares in Hooghly & 10000 hectares in West Midnapore approximately.

Extensive damages to vegetables in South & North 24 Parganas, Howrah & Hooghly.

Several roads will remain cut off due to uprooted trees, lamp posts & signal posts.

Transport is likely to be scarce.Met office has warned that after effects will continue till late afternoon
