Images of a rare white turtle hatchling, suffering from leucism, have gone viral on the internet. Netizens are in love with the beautiful creature.
Time-and-again, we come across videos and images of rare animals on the internet. They not only manage to leave us happy, but also inquisitive at times. That is exactly what the recent photos of a rare leucistic baby turtle, that have gone viral, are making us feel.
WHAT IS A LEUCISTIC TURTLE?
The Facebook account of Town of Kiawah Island, South Carolina recently shared the images of a white baby turtle. The hatchling was white because it had a condition called leucism. In leucism, the animals suffer partial loss of pigmentation.
They shared the images with the caption, “This morning, our Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol #kitp , Zone 8, inventoried the last nest on the island. #338. You can imagine the excited ‘oohs’ and the ‘aah’s’ from the guests, including some @collegeofcharleston students, when the patroller found a lone, leucistic hatchling in the nest. (Leucism is a condition where animals have reduced pigmentation. Leucism is different from albinism as albino animals have a complete loss of pigment, leaving them completely white with red or pink eyes. Thanks to Nancy Kablach Condron for the clarification.) It was a first for everyone in attendance! We also included a few photos of a rare and elusive beach Beetle (sic).”
The images show the hatchling walking on the sand and going towards the water.
WHAT DOES THE INTERNET FEEL ABOUT IT?
The internet fell in love with the rare hatchling. The post got a lot of likes and shares along with hundreds of comments. Have a look at some of them:
